Artis’s Statement – Carpet “The Garden of Love”
A tribute to nature, a critique of humankind, and a play of light in oceanic depths
“The Garden of Love” is not merely a woven piece—it is a visual and conceptual experience that blurs the lines between tradition and innovation. In this unique work, for the first time, the very grid that usually guides the weaver behind the scenes has become part of the design itself, layered visibly over the underwater motifs—almost as if the weaver’s creative mind has stepped out from the shadows and claimed its presence within the artwork.
This carpet tells a story of a world beneath the sea, where colours masterfully reflect the duality of depth and surface. As light shifts or the viewer’s perspective changes, new tonalities emerge. The use of colour—especially deep ocean blues and coral greens—invites the viewer into a surreal realm, where love, nature, and visual perception blend in harmony.
Amid this dreamlike landscape, six stars appear. Five of them shine brightly, symbolizing nature. But the sixth, woven in blue at the center and distinctly different, represents humanity’s interference with nature. Through this deliberate contrast, the designer warns: as long as human creation flows in harmony with nature, beauty endures, however when ideas are born from disconnection and dominance, even the most well-intentioned designs devolve into disharmony and distortion.
“The Garden of Love” is a celebration of harmony with nature, a dive into the hidden beauty of the sea, and a love that survives only through coexistence with the living world.
